I was introduced to the concepts of intimacy work for film and theatre in 2021, during my last semester of university. My instructor, pLynn Johnson, was in the midst of her training as an IP, and introduced concepts of consent based rehearsal practices immediately in our program.
Since then, it's been a passion of mine. It seems so simple, but as actors we're conditioned to do as we're told without question, which not only compromises our safety, but the safety of our fellow performers. As a white, cis-presenting performer, I have a lot of inherent privilege and I feel the need to use that to educate other actors (often mostly men) and encourage them to consider the merit and value of Intimacy Professionals on set. So far, I've had great results with that and am motivated by how many performers I've spoken to that want to contribute to creating safer spaces.
I was fortunate to take the knowledge I had already and create a Consent Based Rehearsal Practices workshop for teens while I taught summer camps and Bard on the Beach. It was wonderfully inspiring to see multiple cohorts of young actors embrace these concepts and normalize open communication with each other and their directors.
I've been training with Vancouver based Principal Intimacy Professionals since January 2024, with instruction from Amanda Cutting, Phay Moores, Megan Gilron, Megan Wong, Megan Schroeder, and Anastasia St Amand. I look forward to continuing my education and to continue encouraging others to make performance spaces safe spaces.
